One Card Only: 50 cents well spent

This card is definitely previously enjoyed, but it is really hard to pass on a 1963 Bob Uecker that's even in that condition.

At least the back still looks pretty nice.

WHA on a Sunday

A miscellaneous bunch of cards from the 70s on a Sunday morning? Why not?

All of the cards today were picked up from a 50 cent bin at a local card show. While there wasn't too much WHA in the bin, I still picked up all 6 cards I came across. That is the first Calgary Cowboys card in my collection.

 The Toronto Toros and the Chicago Cougars also made their collection debut with the trip through this bin. Looking through the team set of the former, the photographer really seemed to have a thing for not looking at the camera. Either that, or a far better player was off to the side, and he distracted them.

Cartoons on the back! That means 1974 > 1975. Easily.

Expo Recap Part 6

Vintage! More accurately, previously enjoyed vintage. There was a dealer with a handful of these, and I got a handful for other collectors on my list, I still picked up a few for myself.

I'm not a Phillies collector, but I do like seeing the 'Fightin' Phillies' on a card. And hey, if the table is X for $Y and I have X-1, I certainly can do worse than adding a random 1953 card to the mix.

A chance to pick up a decent shot of a Kentucky Colonels jersey? Sure.

The Floridians? Ditto. Back to 1971 for these two cards.

And some vintage CFL as well. I usually find myself getting these for stateside NCAA alumni collectors, so it was different to get one for myself. And he's a Hall of Famer as well.

Another HOFer and the most recent card in this post, coming from 1972.

While a card from his playing days wouldn't show up on a "X for $Y" table, this one from his coaching days certainly might. The Kraut liner grew up right around the corner from me. After his passing last year, I came across a photo of him in his youth. The three homes you see all the way in the back are still standing, as is the factory above his shoulder, although that has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

The back of the card even references the Kraut Line, and I don't even need to rub a coin over the back of the card to find the answer!

Expo Recap Part 4

A short break from boxes for some 2/14 acquisitions.

I was able to knock a pair of cards of my not-so-realistic want list at the show, and that's a really great thing. I wanted a vintage card from Geoffrion's time with the NY Rangers and while I'd prefer the 66-67 "TV set" version, this 67-68 is just as good. This is my second card of his from his playing days in the collection, joining a 1960 Parkhurst.

Slightly miscut, but I don't really care as this 1959 Ronnie Knox joins the football collection in his second appearance. He's definitely one of the more interesting members of the binder, and I've rambled about him before. Check that link out, mainly for the fact it gave me an excuse to post about the Batman surfing episode.

Tall Boy! Off to 1969 for the third and final vintage acquisition. This also becomes the oldest of the basketball cards in my 2/14 collection.

Let's fast forward to this decade, and my status as Keith Wenning super collector. I had his regular autograph from this set, and now I've got the canvas version.

From cardboard from the 60s to shiny die-cut cards of today, here's a pair of Alshons to wrap this post up. The orange is /249 and the blue is /199. Incredibly, I got both these parallels, and completely forgot to add the base version to my stack. Oops!

2018 Adventures in Repacks - Part 28 - Fleas!

Here's the flea market repack I referenced in my last post. It is a typical brick, with a bunch of cards with a hit in the middle for $5. What is unexpected is that this was a baseball repack. The stuff isn't as recent as the hockey bricks, but this was still fun.

It was Chan Ho Park leading the way in this pack as the first visible card. I'm going to try to group the cards together in themes the rest of the way through the post.

There were a stack of thicker card visible at the side of the brick, and I was curious what they were from. They were this 9 card stack of gold parallels out of 2003 Bowman. There's a few guys here I'd never heard of, as could be expected, but a Met is a nice highlight. I didn't remember that future Jay Rajai Davis was a Pirate at one point.

More Bowmans. Another Met. Another Jay.

Not a lot of 2010 stuff in this. What there was came from 2010 Topps Update and 2013 Topps S1. I really like the Bobby Wilson photo with how casually he's arriving at the base.

Here's some random UD stuff from the 90s.

The "Who need the MLB license?" portion of the repack. That Gwynn is still a really sharp card, though, and I really don't notice it so much on the legends portion of the Diamond King cards.

Returning back to licensed stuff, here's a nice little sampling across the various brands that appeal to that sorta thing. That's Gil McDougald in the upper corner on a reprint from 2001.

Some actual older cardboard. The Wills is a nice card, despite a couple creases. I love the classic "now with" and OPC cards. Is it an Expos card for that binder? Maybe.

The hit. A plain white swatch, but at least it is of a star player.

And there you have it. I liked the variety more here than the hockey repacks, and kinda wish I'd picked up a second or third one of these.

Mailed Mets

OK. So this isn't the best photographic entry into Mookie's cardboard history, but any chance to start off a post with some Mookie cannot be ignored.

I guess I could have used this Mookie from this grouping of early 80s Mets instead. Maybe I was just leaning towards the first one being just slightly off-center.

Vintage!

There's always room in posts for any sort of 1998 Metal Universe. If you don't want a card that appears to feature a 100ft tall Carlos Baerga using Times Square as a batter's box, then what is wrong with you?

Sportflics! It was McDowell!

I had no idea that there was a Kevin Mitchell starting lineup card with him on the Mets until this showed up. And am thankful for it.

I'm using two cards I was completely unaware of to wrap up this post. I knew of the regular Donruss and the Baseball's Best version. I didn't know about the all-star version until it showed up in the mailer.

And there you have it! Thanks for all these goodies, and don't be surprised if an envelope with some 70's OPC Cubs heading to Peoria in the near future.

Expo Recap Part7: Basketball and Baseball

As the Expo recap gets down to its second-last post of the show, time for some stuff from the baseball and basketball that didn't really fit into any of my PCs, but it just seemed like a nice inexpensive acquisition.

While the photo is the highlight here, as can be expected with Stadium Club releases. But, Ryon Healy was nice enough to add his autograph to the card. I did learn courtesy of the COMC Challenges that Healy is an Oregon alum, so I picked up a second card of his to send off to Kerry @ Cards on Cards.

Maybe the booth I came across with inexpensive autographs should have been set up in Northern California as opposed to Mississauga.

The only thing better than one Archives Fan Favourites auto is two of 'em.

While much of the 70s O-Pee-Chee stuff I picked up was destined for other bloggers, I did get a few for myself, mainly for interesting photos or for somewhat sketchy airbrushing.

Ditto for some 70s basketball. Do I really need an excuse to get a card of guy name Lucius? Or of World B. Free?

Completely random oddball Ginter relic! And yes, this got grouped with my baseball hits in that binder. Mainly because I don't have a Joggler binder.

Expo Recap Part 5: For the team binders

Just as the title says, now you get some acquisitions for my various team collections, with little rhyme or reason. I avoided the home team premium at the show by not getting any Raptors or Blue Jays cards. That's one way to do it!

I thought I'd be relying on COMC or sportlots to get my mitts on this retail only card celebrating the Mets first World Series. I love the pennant visible right at the front, complete with Mr. Met! The Jays also have one in the series, but when you look closer at it, you can tell it is from the player introductions during Game 3 of the 1992 Series. Sheesh.

Contrasting styles! Gaudy vs. subdued.

And some vintage 70's goodness! You can't tell from the fronts, but both of these are O-Pee-Chee cards. I was able to get a nice selection of these from a 30 for $10 box, and some of my trading partners will be finding others in upcoming envelopes.

Also in that box - several 70's basketball cards and a couple of nice additions to my Celtics collection. Again, some basketball collectors on my tradelist could find some cards from this set in their bubblers.

Random Karlsson relic!

I guess this show seemed like a good time to acquire some relics from the Limited Edition subset.

I originally though this one would go nicely into my Bruins collection, but instead opted for it in the mask binder instead. My binders. My choices.

Bills! And the new starting quarterback! I didn't have any problem with Tyrod's performance (everybody on the team stunk last Sunday) so this just seems like desperation as the Bills undergo their usual mid-season implosion. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

A 2014 Rookie auto of someone still on the team? Wow. To add to the rareness of that little factoid, this purple parallel is /15. You've also got a nice look at the Ralph Wilson memorial patch.

2017 Adventures in Repacks - Part 15.1 - Football Goodies

Flashing back to the Spring Expo, the final item I showed off was this:

It was a $5 box that contained some well loved CFL cards, a bunch of Topps Finest base, some 1991 Pacific sealed packs and some misc. stuff. Time to finally show these off, and I'm leading with the CFL.

Most of the cards were from 1970 OPC, but there were a couple outsiders, such as the 1965 card of Elsby. I love looking at comparing the old logos and uniforms to the current ones on these cards. The Als might have had one of the more basic ones, but it would translate nicely to a helmet for a throwback theme.

A kicker with a card in a 100-ish card set. Wow. That's the second vintage Dave Raimey that I'll be sending to Too Many Manninghams at some point.

If a Blue Bomber OL guy got a card in 1970, I probably got one of them.

The only other non-1970 card was this one in the Tiger-Cats grouping. It is from 1971.

There's something you won't see on current cards - positions for players that played both offensive and defensive positions.

Another thing you won't see again - the position of Flanker listed as opposed to Wide Receiver. Dave Tobey is an Oregon alum that will be sent to Cards on Cards in a future bubbler.

The Lehmann was probably the best example of a card that was well-loved.

And it ends with these 3 Stampeders cards. I love the name Granville Liggins. That just seems like a football name. He was named Lineman of the Year while at Oklahoma, but was likely too short for a career in the NFL. So, he came north to Canada and never left, now living in Ontario.

No content for the green Riders in this box, so that's it for this. The Finest will be up next, followed by the misc stuff with the Pacific packs set aside for when I'm in the mood to bust something. Cheers!
