COMC and the 2/14 binder

Back to back posts with nothing but 2/14 content contained within!

As with the PWE barrage from yesterday, there was only one basketball card in the mix. But this does add another relic into the hits portion of the collection. I still want a mask relic.

Here's a first for my collection - my first Operation Desert Shield card! As for the other one...

The bi-lingual greatness of O-Pee-Chee!

The big winner here for baseball was Scott Scudder, who has jumped to 51 total cards with these 4. The 1990 Topps is also an OPC version, bringing twice the French-ness into this group. The UD card is the gold hologram parallel as well. 

My first autograph of Ryan McKenna, a Sky Blue parallel, and a Bowman Heritage Chrome card help push him into the double digits. He was placed on the 40 man roster in the previous off-season, but is still in the minors, such as they are this season.

I have three Garrett Fugate cards in my collection - all autographs. He does have base cards in this Sage release.

Start with a hit from a player with red, white and black uniforms. Let's end with the same. Chronology did have a really deep checklist of random retired players and I was pleased to see Sean Hill on the list. I grabbed the 'canes spot in a couple group breaks. While that did allow me to get some Whalers content to send to Shane @ Shoebox Legends, I didn't land a Sean Hill until getting it from COMC.

2020 Adventures in Repacks: Part 24.2 - Football From The Source

My order of 2020 Score seems stuck in UPS hell, so I'm returning to the repack order. These cards are part of a 100-card hanger pack, where the cards are in 2 groups of 50. I'm breaking these up even more, with each of the next posts in this series being about 25 cards each.

2012 Strata - Morris Clairborne - 3 of the 4 visible cards were rookies. Morris was still in the NFL as of last season, where he picked up a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs.

1991 Platinum - Barry Sanders - The photo on the back is the other contender for the best photo in this portion. If it was the front of the card, it probably would have gotten the nod.

A very respectable start to this with a surprising number of keepers. I'll get to the next half of the half next post.

Sometimes, there are days you just have to post a card of a guy named Putt Choate.

Especially when it has been in your "to-be-posted" folder since May.

Building My Own Repack - Part 3 - Maturity is Overrated

Yes. I am aware the last name isn't pronounced that way. No. I will not be able to suppress my inner Beavis when I see that name.

It doesn't matter which team he's playing for on the card, both of the above statements are still in play.  With these, I'm just 1 shy of double digits for Harry Colons in the collection with these 3 cards.

Topps Total was also a football product, and you can contrast the photo choice from a player's rookie year to his sophomore season quite easily here. These are cards 4 and 5 of Miller.

Your final big winner in terms of a large bunch of new cards that more than double his portion of cards is Jeff Graham, as he jumps to 30 by including cards that go back to his college days.

That's a slightly less literate way of covering a player's new team in comparison to the classic "now with..." that O-Pee-Chee used. At least it isn't a ghastly airbrushing or photoshop job.

Sometimes cards don't really scan in such a manner to show how bright they really are. This one definitely does not follow that rule.

It is enough to make me welcome the colourful, but sedate MVP cards.

2/14 Football

After implying that I'm lax in posting the 2/14 content that's in my COMC 'to be posted' box, I might as well start digging in.

I'll lead off with an original Jacksonville Jaguar. Only because I'm incredibly immature.

Mike Zuga never reached the NFL, but he still got this card out of Winners in 1988. I can't find out what Winners was. A local card company? An Alabama store? Either way, he debuts in the binder.

Jim Kelly stars the rest of the way home with this variety of cards. It is just my usual method of looking at the lowest priced cards of a particular player at COMC, finding what I need and then adding a bunch of them to the cart. Easy! After all, as a Bills fan, I really couldn't let Steve McNair take the numbers game in the collection.

Let's throw some numbered cards in for good measure! These 12 items make it 95 Jim Kelly appearances in the collection, tied with McNair for the football lead.

Back to the mailbag again, but this time covering mailings from the card companies themselves.

Are Panini Rewards redemptions? Is corn grass? Whether the answer is yes or no, I've got 400 points to play with. What can that get?

He's been an all-star, but his autographs in Panini Rewards land still are pretty reasonable. Shelling out 250 pts for an on-card autograph numbered /20 for Lowry is a pretty easy decision.

While browsing around, I noticed there were some hits available for only 50 points. I didn't expect anything super valuable there, I did wrap things up with 3 cards I was more than happy with.

Although in this card's case, I think Kerry @ Cards on Cards would be happier with this. Especially considering I just had a pile of 4 PWEs show up from Oregon over the past few mail days.

Sure, he never saw the NFL. But if you think I'm passing on an autograph of some guy nicknamed and listed as "Shock" on his card, you don't know my collecting habits.

A Hall of Fame autograph is a great way to wrap up this shopping spree. Even better that it is a throwback Kings uniform that Sarunas is rocking in the photo. I guess I could have got one of him (with similar numbering) in his more familiar Golden State colours, but this one easily had better intangibles.

I expected this within days of entry after pulling this late last year. Instead, it took months.

But it is a nice looking on-card acetate auto/relic of the Cardinals QB turned Bills TE.

Quarter Box Non-Sens

Here's the rest of the quarter box content, not counting the trade package content.

Starting with a defunct team will always be an acceptable choice. You get a nice look at the Cleveland logo, and combine it with skeevy 70s facial hair for a great card.

Another good choice for a card to pull from a quarter box - wire photos from 2011 Parkhurst.

I did take the opportunity to grab a handful of miscellaneous additions to the mask binder. My favourite among the cards I got for the mask is the Charlie Lindgren, but my favourite card is the unfortunately-named Parris Duffus.

Here are some Kitchener Rangers alum. Scott Timmins, couch surfer extraordinaire, makes his debut in my collection. I'd actually had the autographed parallel of the Ryan Murphy in my collection prior to this, but not the base card. The Steve Mason is a McDonald's release.

Aside from the Neely these were just random "I like this card" additions to the miscellaneous binders. Also, how could I pass on a card of a guy named Reto Von Arx?

2016 Adventures in Repacks - Part 43: Downtime

I just did a major COMC Credit ---> Blowout Cards cash-in in anticipation of Black November/Friday, and by the time this posts they should arrive and be busted. So, in the meantime, let's downscale it a bit with a trio of $1 hanger packs from the Dollarama.

2011-12 Biography of a Season - Marian Gaborik - What better way to start off than with a new card for my 2/14 collection? This is especially nice, as I don't have too many all-star uniforms in the collection. And yes, this card is cut in some sort of slightly non-rectangular shape. Can't say I care.
