Mets in the Mail

Time to wrap up a trade with Too Many Manninghams, and fatten out the Mets content with some cards in a mailer from #supertrader Waiting 'til Next Year.

Only one hit among the group, and it is an autograph of Generation-K alum Paul Wilson. Ah, what coulda been. Has it been long enough that we no longer hate Dallas Green for wrecking those arms?

I will never tire of pulling Action Packed cards from mailers or repacks. Probably, if the embossed cards like this continued well past the early 90's that wouldn't be so.

Must highlight Metal Universe. Even if they scan so poorly as to obscure the background in scans, some of the background choices are a bit out there. Sure, Rey Ordonez straddling a subway is kinda unique, but does it really compare to a bug-eyed Tony Womack diving out of the way of a plane?

I had no idea an all-framed set existed until I opened the WTNY mailer.

The big winner here was the Mike Piazza portion of my binders, adding 5 new cards to their pages, even if he shares the bill with Robin Ventura on one of them.

And to end things, some miscellaneous Mets from the binder, with a slight emphasis on chrome-y, shiny cards.

Thanks for all these goodies. It was nice to finally be caught up on the packages.

And then a package from COMC showed up this morning.

Bills! Bills! Bills! (and some baseball)

As the Bills continue their trek to a magnificant 0-4 September, I'm going to highlight some Bills that showed up recently in a return envelope from Night Owl Cards. I just sent him a starter kit for a birthday collection, and might see myself hunting for Duncan Keith and Claude Lemieux at the Expo.

To start, here's my favourite photo in the group. It might be from the junk wax era, but that's a beautiful shot of a snow-covered field at Rich Stadium.

One of the best things about the junk wax era was the large sets meant that players in positions that would rarely get cards nowadays, such as the special teams players.

Or Offensive Linemen.

The big winner in terms of volume was Darryl Talley. Even though none of these are of his Spiderman look, he's still fun to add cards of to the binder.

Runner-up was Cornelius Bennett with these 2.

This Jim Kelly was a dupe in my 2/14 collection, but not my Bills collection. Overlap can be a good thing.

Action Packed! This is back to back posts featuring cards with an element of depth to their design.

And to end the trade post, here's the baseball portion. Small, but I love that Bunt insert of Noah.

Mail Bag Catch-Up: Night Owl

From the smallest envelope to the largest.

From the "I had no idea set existed" files was this one. That's always a fun way to start recapping the envelope.

And that lead into a small number of Mets in the envelope. 1993 Leaf, as usual, will win it.

But it was the Bills that won the package. Among the 75 Bills cards or so in the bubbler were only 2 dupes. I like that ratio!

And of course, it ends up that the first card in the upper left is Scott Norwood. Because that's so appropriate for showing a bunch of Bills cards. But at least this included some special teams cards.

Why is this photo of Andre Reed on the back of the card and not the front? And now, a whole pile of Bills cards.

Yeah. That's quite a variety of Bills cards.

Thanks for all these! I've got a few cards set aside for a return envelope, and a few COMC inventory cards as well that I will hit ship on before the month is out.

Nothing Subjective About This Assault on my Top 10 List

Since Brian from Highly Subjective and Completely Arbitrary made a major assault on my top 10 most wanted list.

I think this card was on my wantlist the longest, being a desired card for my 2/14 collection. Jordan is not a 2/14 baby (thankfully, considering the cost of adding his cards to my collection), but this photo, featuring Michael Jordan wearing #12, is from a game played on 2/14/1990. His real jersey was stolen from the locker room, so he had to take the court in a nameless #12. This is my second card of him in #12, and it looks like there is only one more available card to finish this portion of the 2/14 collection (points to wantlist).

This one arrived about 12 hours too late. Kinda. I'd put this Stanley Cup parade card of Greg Gilbert into my cart and hit ship at sportlots on Monday evening, only for this to arrive on Tuesday. Fortunately, the one I got from sportlots was the Special Effects parallel, so this one was still a need for my collection.

This was a mask binder want, since I really like adding baseball cards to that collection. With a nice creature-y mask like that, and a name like Maxim St. Pierre, it is no surprise that this former Tigers prospect was from Quebec.

And here's the auto variant of this. For someone that didn't use the traditional ultra thin sharpie to sign, that's actually a pretty nice signature. This one might even migrate from my masked hits binder into my penmanship binder at a later date.

Set completer! Or at least the SP-less base set completer.

And another set completer! WOO-HOO! That's two in one envelope.

And more Mets as well to close this envelope. Thanks for these bonus cards in addition to the all the wantlist cards!

ObCard:

My first hit of Norman Powell! This was the only basketball card I added to my collection at the show, and it marks Powell's first appearance in the hits portion of my Raptors binder. For a second-round pick that came to the Raptors on draft day in the trade that sent Greivis Vasquez to the Bucks, he's been a very nice surprise for the team, and has even been in the starting line-up down the stretch. The lack of a Raptors uniform is offset by the fact it is on-card auto.
